The nominees for the 89th and 2017
Academy Awards were announced on
Tuesday, January 24, 2017.
The nominees include "Fences," "Hidden Figures," "Moonlight," Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge among others.
We have put together five interesting
things you should know about the nomination list.
1. In contrast to 2015 and 2016 when no person of colour was nominated in any of the four major acting categories, a record seven performers of color were recognized in the top acting categories this year.
2. Meryl Streep earned her 20th Oscar
nomination for her role in "Florence Foster Jenkins." With the nomination, Streep remains the actress with the most Oscar nominations.
3. After 20 years, Mel Gibson's war film
"Hacksaw Ridge" earned Gibson his first Best Director nomination since "Braveheart" in 1996.
The war film also scored five other nominations, including Best Actor for Andrew Garfield and Best Picture.
4. "La La Land," a musical comedy scored 14 nominations, becoming one of the most nominated movies in the Academy Awards history.
With 14 nominations, "La La Land" joins nominee record-holders "All About Eve" ( 1950) and "Titanic" (1997). In their various years of nomination, "All About Eve" won six Oscars while "Titanic" won 10 awards.
5. Viola Davis became the first black woman to receive three Academy Award nominations with her nomination for a supporting role in
“Fences.” The actress who already won a Golden Globe for her “Fences” role, got her first Oscar nod for her appearance in “Doubt” (2008).
Davis got her second Oscar nod in 2012 for her role as a maid in “The Help.”
