Since Mauritania’s Timbuktu made the list of nominees for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2014, it’s been cricket sounds for African films at the Oscars.

The nomination announcement yesterday saw no African film on the list of movies nominated for the Best Foreign Language film and we really don’t know why.

Although the category is mostly dominated by European films (they’ve won 56 awards since 1947), several amazing movies have been produced by different African countries since 2014 and the absence of all those films is mildly disheartening.

See a list of all the movies that have made the list below.

1969- Z (Algeria)  Won
1975- Black & White In Colour (Ivory Coast) Won
1995- Days Of Glory (Algeria)
2004- Yesterday (South Africa)
2004- Tsotsi (South Africa) Won
2006- Days of Glory (Algeria)
2010- Outside the Law (Algeria)

There has been a lot of online outrage since the Sunday after Nigerians found out that reality show Big Brother Naija is actually being held in South Africa.

A statement from the broadcasting company, Africa Magic however stated that the main reason for the setting of the reality show is the availability of a location ready made for the reality show.

It read, “We have a fully equipped house in South Africa which is used for the Big Brother shows. For the Voice, our approach was pretty much the same.

“The venue is already set up with all facilities required for the successful execution of the show; this means that we are able to achieve high production values whilst meeting tight timelines/deadlines and ensuring the show comes to our viewers on time, as planned, and with the same globally renowned quality.

“Whilst the house is based in South Africa, the BBN show is 100% Nigerian, with fully Nigerian housemates and content.

“Africa Magic also noted that Big Brother Naija has been greatly improved since the ten years it last aired on Nigerian television.

“The past 10 years and successes of other Big Brother Africa shows have provided opportunities for improving on the show and now we are ready to give the best version of the show to Nigerians.

The next chapter in the beloved blockbuster "Star Wars" saga has a title: Episode VIII will tell the tale of "The Last Jedi"

Lucasfilm on Monday released the title without additional explanation. The film, directed by Rian Johnson, is due in theaters on December 15, 2017.

"We have the greatest fans in this or any other galaxy. In appreciation of the fans, we wanted them to be the first to know the title of the next chapter in the Skywalker saga: Star Wars -- The Last Jedi," the studio said in a statement.

Episode VIII is due to pick up the action where 2015's "The Force Awakens" left off -- with Rey (Daisy Ridley) handing Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) his light saber on a remote mountaintop.

That begs the question: who will the Last Jedi be?

The unveiling of the title immediately prompted speculation among fans: would it be Skywalker, Rey or both (as Jedi can be singular AND plural).

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens," released in late 2015, earned more than $2 billion worldwide, according to boxofficemojo.com.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," a standalone movie in the saga released late last year, has so far raked in more than $1 billion at theaters around the world.

The Nigerian Copyright Commission has since 2011 till the third quarter of 2016 seized a N8.3 billion worth of pirated goods.

The latest raid was on Thursday when the commission seized N275 million worth of pirated works intercepted at the sea ports.

While displaying the three containers of bibles, books and compact discs, the Director-General of NCC, Afam Ezekude, told newsmen about the activities of the commission in the bid to curb the activities of pirates.

“From 2011 to the third quarter of 2016, our collaboration with the Nigerian Customs Service led to the seizure of a total of 25 containers of pirated copyright works.

“Within the same period, the commission carried out a total of 289 anti-piracy operations across the country and seized over eight million assorted pirated copyright products with a market value of about N8.3 billion.

“If these goods were allowed to enter the Nigerian market, Nigerian copyright owners will be losing that value to pirates

“Furthermore, the commission within the period filed several criminal charges against offenders in Federal High Courts and secured a total of 55 convictions against offenders,” he said.
“In the last six years, we have done so much to reduce the activities of pirates,” Ezekude said.

While receiving the seized Bibles, Dare Ajiboye, General Secretary/ Chief Executive Officer, BSN, lauded the efforts of the commission and lamented the challenges the pirates were leaving in the wake of their terrible acts.

“As an organisation, one of the greatest challenges we have is piracy.

“It is saddening to invest time, money and energy to produce a creative work which is stolen and reproduced by pirates,” he said.

2016 was undoubtedly a year in which Nollywood witnessed remarkable improvement not just in the quality of films produced but also in terms of box office revenue.

Nigeria’s filmmaking industry also got massive recognition in the form of a City-to-City feature of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) where seven Nollywood films screened to sold out audiences in Toronto, Canada.

Twice, in the period in review, the existing Nollywood box office records were broken while revenue from Nollywood cross the N1 billion revenue mark despite the economic recession being witnessed.

First by AY Makun’s A Trip to Jamaica which usurped another AY film, 30 Days in Atlanta before surrendering the position to ELFIKE Collective’s The Wedding Party – a film that has crossed the N200 million mark in revenue.

The hefty box office figures means that several questions are being asked about what really went “good”. Was it down to the quality of films? Was it because these films are comedies? Did cinema goers pay more to watch these films? Have Nigerians finally woken up to the goodness of Nollywood?

While it is a bit tricky to pick any of the above as the sole reason for the successes Nollywood witnessed in 2016, official figures released exclusively to TNS by FilmOne Distribution have revealed the average price people paid to watch a movie.

In 2016, the estimated average ticket price paid to for a film in the cinemas was N1,105 (one thousand one hundred and five Naira).

According to reports, The Wedding Party sold for N2,000 within the first few weeks after its release into cinemas. There have also been periods in 2017 when tickets have been sold for N2,000 due to huge ticket demands.

I just hope that the cost of tickets don't go high this year.
