Since Mauritania’s Timbuktu made the list of nominees for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2014, it’s been cricket sounds for African films at the Oscars.

The nomination announcement yesterday saw no African film on the list of movies nominated for the Best Foreign Language film and we really don’t know why.

Although the category is mostly dominated by European films (they’ve won 56 awards since 1947), several amazing movies have been produced by different African countries since 2014 and the absence of all those films is mildly disheartening.

See a list of all the movies that have made the list below.

1969- Z (Algeria)  Won
1975- Black & White In Colour (Ivory Coast) Won
1995- Days Of Glory (Algeria)
2004- Yesterday (South Africa)
2004- Tsotsi (South Africa) Won
2006- Days of Glory (Algeria)
2010- Outside the Law (Algeria)

2014- Timbuktu (Mauritania)

Jada Pinkett Smith who spoke against #OscarsSoWhite in 2016, has reacted to the 2017 Academy Awards nominations which includes six black actors.

In 2016, Jada Pinkett Smith was one of the actors who called for a boycott of the Oscars after no person of color was nominated in any of the four major acting categories.

The nominees for the 89th and 2017 Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday, January 24, 2016, and six black actors were nominated.
Black films including "Fences," "Hidden Figures" and "Moonlight" also got nominations in categories such as the best picture, feature documentary, and best director.
Reacting to the nominations, Pinkett Smith in an interview with Variety expressed her excitement.
“I feel really fantastic. It’s a beautiful thing to see,” Smith said. “We had a lot of exceptional films this year. I’m glad to see that projects like "Hidden Figures," "Fences," and "Moonlight" are getting recognition. I’m very proud this morning.”
On the significance of awards and diversity, the actress and producer said, "Because of the state that our country is in, as artists it’s so important we use our platform to help shine light on how we want to be identified as a country.”
“I look at this as a beautiful step towards that. Just our participation as artists in this time of how we want to represent our country, what is the messaging we want the world to see. As, artists we have strong voices. We create strong imagery in regards to the identity of our country. It’s important that we take responsibility for that.”
"La La Land," a musical comedy tipped to win big at the Oscars next month February scored 14 nominations, becoming one of the most nominated movies in the Academy Awards history.
Other nominees include Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Andrew Garfield, Mel Gibson among others.

Following the announcement of the Oscar nominees today, January 24, 2017, six black actors were nominated for the prestigious awards.

There has been a lot of online outrage since the Sunday after Nigerians found out that reality show Big Brother Naija is actually being held in South Africa.

A statement from the broadcasting company, Africa Magic however stated that the main reason for the setting of the reality show is the availability of a location ready made for the reality show.

It read, “We have a fully equipped house in South Africa which is used for the Big Brother shows. For the Voice, our approach was pretty much the same.

“The venue is already set up with all facilities required for the successful execution of the show; this means that we are able to achieve high production values whilst meeting tight timelines/deadlines and ensuring the show comes to our viewers on time, as planned, and with the same globally renowned quality.

“Whilst the house is based in South Africa, the BBN show is 100% Nigerian, with fully Nigerian housemates and content.

“Africa Magic also noted that Big Brother Naija has been greatly improved since the ten years it last aired on Nigerian television.

“The past 10 years and successes of other Big Brother Africa shows have provided opportunities for improving on the show and now we are ready to give the best version of the show to Nigerians.

K9, Yemi Alade and Flavour performed at the opening ceremony of Big Brother Naija 2017.”

The next chapter in the beloved blockbuster "Star Wars" saga has a title: Episode VIII will tell the tale of "The Last Jedi"

Lucasfilm on Monday released the title without additional explanation. The film, directed by Rian Johnson, is due in theaters on December 15, 2017.

"We have the greatest fans in this or any other galaxy. In appreciation of the fans, we wanted them to be the first to know the title of the next chapter in the Skywalker saga: Star Wars -- The Last Jedi," the studio said in a statement.

Episode VIII is due to pick up the action where 2015's "The Force Awakens" left off -- with Rey (Daisy Ridley) handing Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) his light saber on a remote mountaintop.

That begs the question: who will the Last Jedi be?

The unveiling of the title immediately prompted speculation among fans: would it be Skywalker, Rey or both (as Jedi can be singular AND plural).

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens," released in late 2015, earned more than $2 billion worldwide, according to boxofficemojo.com.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," a standalone movie in the saga released late last year, has so far raked in more than $1 billion at theaters around the world.

"The Belko Experiment" explores a twisted social experiment, in which a group of 80 Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogata and ordered by an unknown voice on an intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed.
The office horror movie had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and is set for a worldwide release on March 17, 2017.

Its no news again  that Kemi Adebita's film "The Wedding Party" is the Nollywood film that is presently topping the charts and making rave in the cinemas at the moment. Such is evident in the fact that my two last post before  this has been solely about the movie making this it's third straight single post.

In this post we will be analyzing the reason as to why Kemi Adebita The Wedding Party  was able to over throw Robert O. Peters A Trip to Jamaica (spoiler; or not so much of a spoiler again: The Wedding Party has grossed over 200 million Naira in just 16 days). First get the facts straight, no other genre of movie besides comedy will be able to perform well ( in terms of reaching and surpassing the 100 million mark) in the present Nigeria situation.

Its understandable to an extent. with all the challenges Nigeria is faced with at the moment, its understandable why an average Nigerian person will prefer to pay to watch a comedy flick that will relive him of the burden of the Nation for a few hours than pay for a movie just for the sake of its all round awesomeness. (evident in Kunle Afolayan's CEO movie that premiered just months within the same time The Wedding Party and A Trip to Jamaica did).

Ay's movie have been holding up to the no 1 spot for two years now, performing the trick with two movies back to back until  The Wedding Party came calling. Now this two block busters are both in the comedy genre, so what did The Wedding Party do right?

It's a simple trick that Don Omope and Ijeoma Agukoronye knows that Ay Makun refused to apply in his movie. You see when a Nigerian has to pay for a show, concert, comedy gig or movie, even if the ticket cost is five hundred Naira, they would want to squeeze out every worth out of that five hundred Naira.  That's why most times when you organize a program with no top chart celebrity listed to perform the turn out is usually low no matter what the ticket price is.

In A Trip to Jamaica Ay only employed the prowess of Funke Akindele,  Nse Ikpe Etim, Cynthia Morgan and Patoranking who more or less made cameo appearances, some Hollywood 'stars' who are practically unknown to Nigerians, so most of the people whop went to see  A Trip to Jamaica were just the same set of people who the previous cast of 30 days in Atalanta was able to wow, no new audience to boost the rakings.
But when  Don Omope and Ijeoma Agukoronye were going to ensemble a cast, they brought in Banky W, Emmaomg, RMD, Alibaba, Frank Donga, names that most Nigerians are currently familiar with and interact with,  so its easier to bring in the fans of this home grown and celebrated
celebrities and more others who don't fall for one or two but a combination of celebs.

If Ay wants to reclaim his spot as the no 1 highest grossing movie producer in Nollywood, he has to apply the logic he uses in his comedy shows "Ay Live" to the cinema screen. Let the next installment of the gigantic series boast of more home grown and familiar stars then maybe Nigerians will be more than persuaded to pay for his flick.

Yes, Disney fans, the rumors are true: There is a connection between Frozen and Tarzan — and it’s exactly the connection you think.

Frozen co-directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck blew everyone’s minds in a Reddit AMA when Jennifer revealed that Anna and Elsa’s parents — the King and Queen of Arendell — didn’t exactly die on the boat at sea as the film’s opening montage suggests. Instead, "They got washed up on a shore in a jungle island. The queen gave birth to a baby boy. They build a treehouse. They get eaten by a leopard…”

All of this sound familiar yet? It should, as it’s basically the premise to Tarzan, the 1999 animated movie (which is based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs series that is now nearly 100 years old). And who co-directed that movie? None other than Buck, who has now confirmed that Anna, Elsa, and Tarzan are all siblings. Well, in his world, anyway.

In an interview with MTV, Buck explained that "Of course Anna and Elsa's parents didn't die.” This is, after all, a Disney movie, and while Disney movies may get pretty bleak at times (looking at you, Hunchback of Notre Dame) most are pretty uplifting.

Buck explained that “There was a shipwreck, but they were at sea a little bit longer than we think they were because the mother was pregnant, and she gave birth on the boat to a little boy. They get shipwrecked, and somehow they really washed way far away from the Scandinavian waters, and they end up in the jungle. They end up building a tree house and a leopard kills them, so their baby boy is raised by gorillas. So in my little head, Anna and Elsa's brother is Tarzan.”

Of course, this storyline isn’t officially endorsed by Disney, but it’s fun to think about. As to why or how this fleshed-out alternate reality came to be? Buck says that "When you're working on a feature, you have a lot of time to think about stuff because it takes four years to make one. I think Jen and I were walking to a meeting, and I just start to tell her the entire story.”

And there you have the legend of this Tarzan. We can’t vouch for the Alexander Skarsgård version.

All you had to say to get us excited about Spider-Man: Homecoming was the name Zendaya, though it sounds like Tom Holland is going to be a compelling draw all on his own. In a Facebook Live video posted Friday, the actor revealed that he went undercover at an unnamed high school in the Bronx to prepare for the part (read: he's pretty much just real-life Peter Parker).

"The coolest thing I think I did for the movie was I was enrolled in a high school in New York, in the Bronx, as a secret," Tom said in the video. "No one knew who I was or what I was doing. I had a fake name, a fake accent. I went to school for three days, I think. It was really fun."

"It was really interesting because New York high schools are so different than the schools that I went to in London," he continued. "When I went to school, you had to wear a suit and tie and it's all boys and for me, it was the first time I was in a classroom with girls. It was like a really strange experience. It was really fun."

Apparently, the Tom told some of the kids his secret, and they didn't even believe him.

"I told one kid at the school, I was like, 'Hey man, I'm actually Spider-Man.' He did not believe me, was like, 'What? No.' I said, 'No, seriously, I'm Spider-Man. Like, no joke. Like, let's not mess around anymore. I'm Spider-Man.' He's like, 'I don't believe you,'" Holland said. "And at the time, I hadn't made the movie so I didn't have any pictures to show him, to prove that I was Spider-Man. And he did not believe me at all."

It's unclear if he was trying to tell the kid he was playing Spider-Man or literally Spider-Man. When method acting this intense, it can be hard to parse out the differences between fiction and reality!!!

Get ready for the amazing Spider-Man to become even more amazing in this summer's upcoming reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming.

A new clip starring Peter Parker himself (played by Tom Holland) is giving fans a glimpse at the incredible upgrades the iconic red and blue suit has received — courtesy of Tony Stark himself, of course.

There are three new things to keep an eye out for when it comes to the highly anticipated suit (at least for now). Expect the web shooter to reach a whole new level, brace yourself for web wings, and he also has a built-in GPS tracking system. (Hey, if Tony or the Avengers need him, we guess? Where is he supposed to put a cell phone in that thing?)

Considering the film isn't set to be released until July, we have a feeling there are plenty more teasers to come. Perhaps next time, we'll get more details on Zendaya's mysterious character. Either way, the story's big-screen comeback is already proving to be a pretty epic one.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" was released on December 16, 2016.

Following the release of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" which pulled in nearly $300 million globally, Disney Studio has set a new industry record.
Thanks to successful 2016 releases from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, the studio is officially the first studio to cross $7 billion in global box office, as it boasts of $2.7 billion domestically and $4.29 billion internationally.
“This historic achievement is possible because all of our film studios are bringing their absolute best to the table, telling great stories of all kinds that resonate with audiences across borders, gender, and generations,” said Alan Horn, chairman of the Walt Disney Studios. “These films work because each one has not only something for everyone, but everything for someone.”
Disney has been able to set this new record thanks to 2016 blockbusters such as "Finding Dory", “Captain America: Civil War,” and “Zootopia,” which grossed $1 billion at the global box office.
Other 2016 releases of the studio include “Jungle Book” “Moana” and “Doctor Strange.”
The record was previously held by Universal  which grossed $6.89 billion in 2015 thanks to blockbusters such as “Furious 7,” “Minions,” and “Jurassic World.”

We all know (or maybe just a few of us) the story of one of  Hollywood's hottest teen, Kylie Jenner, daughter of Kris and Catilyn Jenner and the last born in the Jenner-Kardashian clan.

She has everything a teen and even some adults can only dream of having, she rolls with the big guns and and plays in the big boys game from photo shots, to covers of magazines, to butt implant surgeries and it kind, to back it up she has the support and backing of her mama Kris Jenner, but this post isn't about her, its about a Nollywood version of her that might be in the making.

Regina Daniels, daughter of Rita Daniels, Chairman of Delta State Actors Guild of Nigeria. Regina Daniels is probably the most sort out teenage actress presently in the Nollywood scene, charging a whooping sum of five hundred thousand naira per movie from four to ten thousand range she was charging when was just starting out in the game.

Regina Daniels who just celebrated her fifteenth birthday last October made headlines recently, when she posted some not so Nigeria cultured pictures on her Instagram to celebrate clocking another year.

She had fans and lovers of Nollywood all over her matter. as they were all on her trail, some critizing her for the picture others judging her.

We just might be on the verge on seeing a Nollywood version Kylie Jenner, i just hope she remembers the root she's from and on the journey to stardom not turn herself to the object of satisfaction of some perverted minds.
