Kaira, a woman in her mid-thirties, is looking to settle down. As many women in her shoes are wont, she finds herself in a church meeting with an enthusiastic pastor assuring a group of single women marriage through a method that requires taking a step of faith and sowing seeds.

Kaira takes the message literally, buys herself a wedding gown and begins to push so hard that she puts a strain on her relationship and her frustrated boyfriend, Kufre, kicks her out. A year later, she meets and falls for another guy, Dapo, whose aim is to have a baby as his barren wife (Tricia) insists they cannot adopt. When Kaira discovers his plot and the fact that he is married, she is heartbroken and leaves him. Eventually, she gives up the manhunt, and this is when she meets Charles, who is the most unlikely man she would ever be with.
Produced by Emem Isong and Uduak Isong Oguamanam and directed by Tom RobsonMrs Somebody is a 2012 romantic comedy film by the Royal Arts Academy which casts Uche Jombo as Kaira, Yemi Blaq as Kufre, Kenneth Okolie as Dapo, Belinda Effah as Tricia and Bobby Obodo as Charles. Jombo brings a forceful and very hilarious vibe to the film that would otherwise have been too basic. She portrays well her desperation in the way she tries so hard to charm everyone into giving her what she wants: a ring. She may have overdone it at certain scenes till it is on the verge of losing its believability, but still, she lights up the film

The pastor at the beginning, while attempting to be comical, can’t seem to decide if he should be real or fake, and this kicks off the movie to a very unserious start, one we find hard to recover from. That scene alone goes on for over five minutes; five long minutes of undecidedness that renders us undecided too, wondering if we should go on watching or just take a rain check. When we do recover, we are quickly thrown out of the subplot of Kufre and his mom and adviser friends into Dapo and Tricia’s subplot, which, while we are trying to adjust, are thrown out yet again.
Mrs Somebody has a familiar and interesting but shoddy story, one that seems to have been skimmed over impatiently by the director cum writers. We could give the excuse of not wanting to take too much time, but if there was sufficient time for many chat-with-friends scenes (the type where a character sits around in a bar or in a bedroom and is being advised by a friend for minutes on end), then there should have been time to properly see the subplots through in a way that doesn’t leave the audience parched and lost.
Bobby Obodo is carefree and fun to watch as Charles. The progression of his chemistry with Kaira is slow and enjoyable, until it reaches a point where it’s not. What with the annoying wanna-gonnas and clichéd ‘I can explain, it’s not what you think.’? He attempts to recover his charm at the last scene, but it’s come too late. Kenneth Okolie’s performance is remarkable, but Belinda Effah is so rigid as Tricia that we barely feel him when they act together. Tamara Eteimo is perhaps the only ‘friend’ in this film that acts well; even Morris K. Sesay does terribly.
I would not have done this review justice if I forgot to mention the music by George Nathaniel and Slam. While it sounds very similar to the soundtracks in Lonely Heart and Spotlight, films from the same producer, it still is beautiful to listen to, and almost always in sync with every scene.

Entertaining is a good way to describe Mrs Somebody. Feeble is another way. Combining both descriptions, we would not be wrong to tag it a ‘just there’ film.

Since Mauritania’s Timbuktu made the list of nominees for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2014, it’s been cricket sounds for African films at the Oscars.

The nomination announcement yesterday saw no African film on the list of movies nominated for the Best Foreign Language film and we really don’t know why.

Although the category is mostly dominated by European films (they’ve won 56 awards since 1947), several amazing movies have been produced by different African countries since 2014 and the absence of all those films is mildly disheartening.

See a list of all the movies that have made the list below.

1969- Z (Algeria)  Won
1975- Black & White In Colour (Ivory Coast) Won
1995- Days Of Glory (Algeria)
2004- Yesterday (South Africa)
2004- Tsotsi (South Africa) Won
2006- Days of Glory (Algeria)
2010- Outside the Law (Algeria)

2014- Timbuktu (Mauritania)

What would happen if Nollywood had an award ceremony that 'honors' the worst films and actors every year?

Hollywood has Razzie Awards. Bollywood has Ghanta Awards. Nollywood, however has no award platform that honors horrible films and actors each year.

Razzie Award is a platform that honors the worst movies and performances of the year. The winners are determined by more than 600 voters in the U.S. and voters from other foreign countries.
Razzie Awards usually hold a day to the Oscars. Over the years, box office successful movies and award winning actors like Ben Affleck, "Fifty Shades of Grey," Michael Bay, Tyler Perry, Sandra Bullock have emerged winners.
In 2016, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan won the worst actor of the year for his role in "Dilwale."
Marion Cotillard, an Oscar award winner got a French Razzie worst actress Nomination.
There are five things that must happen if Nigeria got an award ceremony that honors the worst in film.

1. 70% of Nollywood movies and actors would make the nominee list

Every year comes with disastrous big screen bomb. Bad movies are nothing new in Nollywood, and considering that at least 70% of Nollywood movies are badly made, coming up with the Nollywood Razzie will not be a difficult task.
Once in a while, a great actor or veteran delivers a horrible role interpretation. Also, 70% of the time, horrible actors are featured in movies that make it to the cinema.

2. Most filmmakers are actors will go in search of their 'haters'

In Nollywood, a negative article directed at a filmmaker simply means the writer is a 'hater.' Imagine an award system that honors horrible movies, most filmmakers will take to social media to write epistles about their hard work and their haters.

3. There would be a physical battle

Some filmmakers and actors will take the battle off social media to the physical.  In Nollywood, most filmmakers struggle to handle criticism appropriately. And for something as 'simple' as the Razzie, some will directly or indirectly go in search of the organizers.

4. Some filmmakers and actors will get better

If Nollywood had a Razzie award, some filmmakers will pick the important lessons and corrections that are being offered by their critics and get better.
Some actors would bear in mind that just because someone feels a certain way about their talent in a particular production, doesn't mean they are not creative or generally good at what you do.

5. Most filmmakers will come up with ridiculous responses

Who isn't familiar with some ridiculous responses Nollywood actors, producers and directors come up with?
A Razzie award will simply birth more hilariously absurd responses such as 'go and shoot yours first,' 'I am making my money,' 'my movie has won several awards,' 'I am acting for my 10 million social media followers' among other responses.
What are somethings that would happen if Nollywood had an award ceremony that honours the worst in film?

Ace movie producer, 2016 most bankable actor and the only one to be featured in the top three highest grossing movie in Nollywood history (30 days in Atlanta, a trip to Jamaica and the wedding party).

Setting his own records and breaking them himself. A few days ago, Ay Makun announced his next movie project, christened "10 days in sin city", a trip to South Africa. Not until yesterday was my attention drawn to the fact that just few days to his announcement, had i written up a post about the three possible location AY could take his fictional character of Akpos to.

Adventures of Apkos: After Jamaica where next?

I name dropped Brazil and Hollywood California, but choose South Africa as the most favorite choice and here we have it: 10 days in sin city; a trip to South Africa.

Whether the movie follows and is a sequel of his past two installments is yet to be known but either way, Ay Makun might just have to contact me ASAP before i reveal his next big plan.

I remain Shalombrain.
